Coverage Basics of Covered California

Selecting the right health insurance plan for your needs can be stressful and even overwhelming. Before selecting your plan, it’s important to know the basics that are typically offered. Every plan is unique and different. Covered California is a free service that connects Californians with brand-name health insurance; it also offers a place where people can receive financial help. Be sure to talk with your agent at Quote Valley Insurance to discuss which plan best fits your unique health needs.

Levels of Coverage
Finger on Insurance
There are four primary levels under which health insurance can be classified:

  • Bronze

  • Silver (and Silver Enhanced Plans)

  • Gold

  • Platinum

For those 30 years old and younger, there is a coverage known as minimum coverage plan, or catastrophic plan. This is available to those who qualify by age or have an exemption due to the lack of available and affordable coverage. This must be purchased directly from a health insurance company.

What Is Covered Under Basic Health Insurance?

All Covered California health insurance plans, no matter the coverage level, provide what is known as essential health benefits. Although all plans differ, and some exclusions apply, the following remain consistent:

  • Ambulatory patient services

  • Emergency services

  • Hospitalization

  • Pregnancy, maternity and newborn care

  • Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment

  • Prescription drugs

  • Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices

  • Laboratory services

  • Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management

  • Pediatric services, including oral and vision care

Supplemental Plans

Dental Coverage

Dental coverage is offered through Covered California for both adults and children. This is an additional coverage to your basic health insurance plan. If you have children, the price of pediatric dental coverage is included in the price of all listed health plans through embedded coverage. While this coverage is not required, it’s essential to talk with your agent at Quote Valley Insurance to ensure you decide on the right plan for you and your family.

Vision Coverage

All offered health plans for children include vision coverage through California Coverage. Vision care coverage for adults is still available through two external companies. These companies provide coverage directly to the adult being insured.
